Anthony Holborne: Fantasie No. 3, trans. Christopher Berg (score)
Little is known about Anthony Holborne (ca. 1545–1602) beyond his surviving music. Holborne's writing is skillful and succinct, and this piece is a contrapuntal gem. If you're looking for a piece that is unknown to today's audiences and is a pleasure to study and play, this may be worth exploring. The piece comes from The Hirsch Lute Book, a manuscript housed in the British Museum. This OrpheusOnFire edition is free.
The piece was composed for six-course lute and works perfectly on a classical guitar with third string tuned to F-sharp. This edition includes detailed fingerings and respects the location of the notes on the fingerboard as indicated in the original tablature.
Included are performance notes and a facsimile of the piece as it appears in The Hirsch Lute Book
You'll receive two pages of music, a page of performance notes, a facsimile of the lute tablature, and information about OrpheusOnFire, for a total of six pages excluding the cover page.
