John Dowland: Earl of Essex Galliard, trans. Christopher Berg (score)

$5

John Dowland's "The Right Honorable Robert Earl of Essex, high Marshall of England, his Galliard" is one of the finest Elizabethan lute galliards. It is inventive, tuneful, and virtuosic. The interplay between 3/4 and 6/8 gives the piece rhythmic vibrancy. This OrpheusOnFire guitar transcription includes detailed fingering for both hands and is based upon the version that appears in Robert Dowland's A Varietie of Lute Lessons from 1610.

Included are two pages of performance notes that explore the music—why is the B section 9 measures long?—and solutions to the technical problems posed by this outstanding piece. The file includes a cover page for those who wish to print the music.
