John Dowland: John Smith's Almaine, trans. Christopher Berg (score)
Christopher Berg's edition of Dowland's virtuosic "Sir John Smith his Almaine" contains two versions of piece for guitar: one with right-hand fingerings modeled after the fingering practices of Renaissance lutenists and one that uses standard right-hand fingerings. When mastered, the techniques used in the first version can facilitate the performance of the rapid scale passages. The second version makes use of the standard middle-index alternation familiar to classical guitarists.
Also included are five pages of performance notes that explore the unique form of this piece and the unusual variation technique used by Dowland.
Thirteen pages total: Six pages pages of music (two versions of the transcription), five pages of performance notes, an "About OrpheusOnFire" page, and a cover if you decide to print and bind the edition.
